What Is the Best College for Learning Differences, Disabilities, and Neurodiversity?
Finding the best college for learning differences, disabilities, and neurodiversity can feel like a critical decision for students and their families – but it is also important to recognize that, despite what US News and World Report would have you believe, there is no such thing as a “Universal Best” when considering any college. Term’s like “Best” or “Most Prestigious” are red herrings which distract students and families away from the most important element – Best Fit and Strongest Match.
When considering any college or university matching the institutions location, support services, majors, accommodations, teaching philosophy, living situation, and a host of other individualized and student-specific requirements result in a complicated situation in which no single college or university can claim to be “Best” if they are not the Best Fit and Strongest Match for your unique situation.
There are a number of great Colleges which cater to learning differences, including but not limited to Landmark College, Lynn University, Beacon College, Curry College, Dean University, and a number of others. These colleges have positioned themselves to be accessible to students who learn differently, and their academic environment is often tailored to the non-traditional learner – but this does not make any one of them “The Best College For Learning Differences” because blanket statements do not cover individual needs and nuances.
In fact, it is often the case that the areas in which these colleges excel – specialized instruction within the classroom environment – is not always the are in which a neurodiverse student needs the most support. When considering “Best Fit” for college take into account not only the academic realm, but also executive functioning support, integrated social support, a student’s independent living skills and needs, and the college or universities ability to provide meaningful engagement in all domains of the student experience.
At Mansfield Hall we work to create a comprehensive living and learning community which supports students in all aspects of their post-secondary life, while still providing them access to world-class colleges and universities, where their intellectual curiosity can be harnessed at the same time they are learning to be both independent and interdependent young adults.

Feeling overwhelmed in college- but not sure why? you’re not alone.
The key isn’t just “pushing through”, it’s learning to recognize what’s happening before you hit that wall, and having systems to reset.
That might look like:
• stepping outside for a walk
• box breathing between classes
• putting on a guided meditation
• reaching out to someone you trust
Small supports = big difference over time.
At Mansfield Hall, we help students build the awareness and tools to regulate, recharge, and navigate college in a way that actually works for them.
What’s one thing that helps you reset when you’re overwhelmed?

Excellent week across the board!
People Ops team member Jo touched down in Madison, receiving a warm welcome with coffee and a trip to see the Capitol building. VP of Program Ops Hayley grounded herself and took in the beauty of the Statehouse. Pancakes were served, and Burlington student Nikhil took the stage to perform with his choir.
A great week to zoom out and back in- and reflect on all the things we have to be grateful for!

The answer: how inclusive it is.

Sensory overload happens when your brain receives more sensory input than it can comfortably process.
Our nervous systems are constantly taking in information, but when there’s too much coming in (or it’s coming too fast) our systems can become overwhelmed.
We get it, and it can be managed with small, intentional supports like reducing input, creating predictable routines, and building in quiet recovery time.
