As more students with Asperger’s Syndrome pursue higher education, it’s clear that traditional college support systems aren’t always enough. That’s where Mansfield Hall steps in.

But before we go any further we should take a moment to recognize that Asperger’s Syndrome is no-longer a recognized diagnosis, and the criteria which formally led to an Asperger’s diagnosis was instead wrapped up into Autism Spectrum Disorder-Level I (ASD-I) with the DSM-5. That being said, we also recognize that the neurodiverse community is a diverse collection of individuals – who may or may not have a diagnosis or rely on the DSM-5 to describe their particular constellation of strengths and challenges – and some individuals still refer to their diagnosis using the term Asperger’s, or even Aspie. The scope of this blog is not to endorse or differentiate between one or the other – but simply to provide resources for individuals who still identify using the Asperger’s diagnosis. In further reading, please feel free to substitute Asperger’s with ASD-I, as the criteria generally align.

At Mansfield Hall, we understand the unique challenges that come with the college transition for students on the autism spectrum, particularly those with Asperger’s. From sensory sensitivities to executive functioning hurdles to social navigation, each student’s experience is unique. That’s why the support for students with Asperger’s in college must be individualized, intentional, and immersive.

A Holistic Approach to Student Success

Support for students with Asperger’s in college should go beyond tutoring or extra time on tests. Students often need help with independent living skills, time management, navigating friendships, and managing anxiety. Mansfield Hall provides a comprehensive model that integrates:

Academic coaching and support

Executive functioning and organizational skills development

Social communication coaching

Residential life programming with built-in structure and flexibility

Community integration and support

These layers of support are designed to meet students where they are and help them build a meaningful, successful, and enjoyable college experience.

Building Self-Awareness and Self-Advocacy

Support for students with Asperger’s in college must also include helping students develop the ability to advocate for themselves. At Mansfield Hall, we help students identify their strengths, understand their needs, and learn how to effectively communicate with professors, peers, and support personnel.

Self-awareness and self-advocacy are essential for long-term success—not just in college, but in life. By coaching students in these areas, we help them develop the confidence and skills they need to become independent, empowered adults.

Executive Functioning and Independent Living

Students with Asperger’s often benefit from structured routines and support with executive functioning. That’s why support for students with Asperger’s in college should include help with planning, prioritization, and follow-through.

Mansfield Hall’s built-in academic structure and residential support help students stay on track with coursework while also learning the skills necessary to live independently. This includes everything from managing a calendar and attending class to meal planning and personal hygiene routines.

Social Success in a Neurotypical World

College is as much a social experience as it is an academic one. Students with Asperger’s may find it challenging to read social cues, manage group work, or build relationships in a new environment. That’s why support for students with Asperger’s in college must include coaching in social thinking and communication.

At Mansfield Hall, our students receive targeted support to help them make meaningful connections, develop appropriate social strategies, and navigate interpersonal challenges. Our approach is grounded in understanding, respect, and the belief that all students deserve opportunities to connect and belong.

The Mansfield Hall Difference

What makes Mansfield Hall different?
